How can I be a volunteer?

Any person taking an interest in sexual orientation and gender identity issues and who are responsible and patient can join us. Interested parties may arrange for interviews with us. An interview involves not only registering personal particulars, but also serves as an opportunity for the applicant to further understand HORIZONS through talking to our volunteers. We keep all personal interformation strictly confidential and it is used for administrative purposes only.

Interview
We do not expect applicants to have model answers on the sexual orientation and gender identity issues, but successful applicants should have basic critical thinking skills and no objection to our Constitution, which will be introduced during interview.

Training Course

Any volunteer who wishes to become one of our counsellors needs to complete a nine-week training course (one class per week). The curriculum includes teaching of basic counselling techniques, legal and medical issues related to sexual orientations and gender idenetities and unique issues involved in counselling sexual minorities. Practicum and examinations are also included. After successful completion of training, trainees are required to go through three probation sessions and display satisfactory performance before becoming a recognized counsellor. Junior counsellors work with supervisors, who are seasoned counsellors.
